Crowns and Bridges
A crown is used to repair and strengthen a badly-broken or damaged tooth without the need for the tooth to be removed. Essentially, it is a cap used to restore a tooth to its original appearance and help prevent further damage, fracture or decay. It fits over the existing natural tooth and replaces the natural crown, the part of the tooth seen above the gum line.
Crowns are quite often used to strengthen teeth that have had root canal treatment as these teeth are more brittle and more likely to fracture.
A bridge, unlike a crown, utilises existing teeth to fill in an area left vacant by one or more missing teeth. This method anchors a prosthetic tooth into the gap using one or usually two adjacent teeth to establish symmetry and create a natural-looking appearance. Apart from restoring the lost teeth, bridges support the remaining teeth and help keep teeth in proper position with a proper bite. This helps prevent the cycle of problems that occur when a tooth is missing, such as the shifting and drifting of remaining teeth, decay and periodontal bone loss.
All crowns and bridges are hand crafted in a local Brisbane dental laboratory rather than being sent to an overseas laboratory .We do this to ensure the quality metals and porcelains compliment the workmanship and satisfy strict Australian recommendations and expectations.
